Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know

Booking & Scheduling

How do I book an appointment?

Booking online is the quickest and easiest way to schedule your appointment. Our online booking system asks detailed questions about your dog's breed, size, coat condition, temperament, and grooming needs so we can provide the most accurate service recommendations and pricing estimate. If you have questions or need assistance, you're welcome to call us; however, because our groomers are often working with clients' pets throughout the day, we may not always be able to answer immediately. For the fastest response, please send us a text message, and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

How far in advance should I book?

Most clients book 1–4 weeks in advance. Availability varies by season.

Do you offer recurring appointments?

Yes. We can automatically schedule your pet's grooming every 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks.

Mobile Service

How does mobile grooming work?

We bring a fully equipped grooming salon directly to your home, so your pet receives one-on-one care without leaving the driveway.

Do I need to provide water or electricity?

No. Our grooming van is fully self-contained.

Do I need to be home during the appointment?

We only need access to your pet. Many clients continue working from home while we groom.

What areas do you serve?

We proudly serve La Jolla, Clairemont, and Pacific Beach. There are exceptions, so please call us to confirm whether we can service your area.

Pricing

How much does grooming cost?

Every dog is unique, so pricing is based on several factors, including the selected service, breed, size, coat condition, desired haircut, temperament, and the time required to complete the groom.

Our groomers have 5–18 years of professional grooming experience and consistently maintain excellent client satisfaction.

Most full-service appointments range between $130 and $400.

Is mobile grooming more expensive than a salon?

Mobile grooming offers personalized one-on-one care, convenience, reduced stress, and no kennel time, which is reflected in our pricing.

Why is mobile grooming more expensive?

Our experienced groomers bring a luxury salon experience to your home. Mobile service includes specialized equipment, travel time, and dedicated one-on-one attention—factors reflected in our rates. There are no extra charges for specialty shampoos. We believe your pet deserves a shampoo matched to their needs—whether that means detangling, skin support, unscented formulas, or something else—and that choice is included in your service.

Is there an additional mobile service or administrative fee?

No. Unlike some mobile grooming companies, we do not charge a separate service or administrative fee. Fuel, travel, and other mobile operating expenses are already included in your dog’s grooming price.

Why can pricing change after my appointment begins?

During booking and check-in, we provide the most accurate estimate possible based on the information available. At your dog's first appointment, we also verify their weight to ensure they are placed in the correct pricing category.

Once grooming begins, we may discover factors that could not be fully assessed beforehand, such as coat condition, matting, excessive undercoat, behavior, grooming difficulty, or additional time required. If significant adjustments are necessary, we will communicate them whenever possible before proceeding.

What if my dog has mats or excessive undercoat?

Matting and excessive undercoat require additional time, specialized techniques, and place significant wear on grooming equipment. Dematting can also be uncomfortable for your dog and increases physical strain on the groomer. For these reasons, dematting is billed at approximately $2 per minute.

If matting is determined to be severe enough to compromise your dog's comfort or safety, the groomer may recommend clipping the coat rather than brushing the mats out. Even when clipping is necessary, additional time and equipment wear are involved, and dematting or coat recovery fees may still apply.

Dogs with excessive shedding or impacted undercoat may also require additional de-shedding services, which will be added to the grooming price when necessary.

What is a sugar scrub?

A sugar scrub uses a coarse-grained sugar mixed into the shampoo to gently exfoliate dead skin and help lift excess loose coat. Many pets leave with a softer feel and a fresher, healthier-looking coat after this treatment.

Grooming Process

How long does a grooming appointment take?

Most appointments take 1–3 hours, depending on your pet's size, coat condition, and selected services.

Will my dog be kenneled?

No. Your pet receives individualized attention and is groomed from start to finish.

Why do you shampoo twice?

Shampooing twice gives your dog the best possible clean. The first wash breaks down and removes dirt, oils, and buildup from the coat. The second wash allows the shampoo to work more effectively, leaving the coat cleaner, softer, and fresher for longer. It’s a simple extra step that helps ensure your dog leaves looking, feeling, and smelling their best.

Can I stay with my pet during grooming?

For safety, liability reasons, and to help pets remain calm, owners typically do not stay inside the grooming van during the appointment.

How long does grooming take?

Every groom is different. Most appointments take 45 minutes to 3 hours, depending on your dog's size, coat condition, temperament, and the services requested.

Individual groomers may also work at different speeds while maintaining the same high standard of care and quality.

Do you specialize in specific breeds?

Our groomers have experience grooming a wide variety of breeds and coat types, from everyday pet trims to breed-specific styling. If your dog has a unique haircut or breed standard you'd like us to follow, simply let us know during booking.

Can you groom giant breeds?

Yes. Our grooming van is designed to accommodate many giant breeds. If you're unsure whether your dog's size can be safely accommodated, please contact us before booking and we'll be happy to discuss your pet's specific needs.

Do you offer pet-safe coloring?

Not at this time. However, we are always looking to expand our services. If you're interested in creative grooming or pet-safe color, please let us know. Client interest helps us determine which new services to introduce.

Pet Requirements

Do vaccinations need to be current?

Yes. We require current rabies vaccinations as required by California law.

Can you groom senior dogs?

Absolutely. We specialize in gentle grooming tailored to senior pets and their individual needs.

Can you groom aggressive or anxious dogs?

We evaluate each pet individually and prioritize safety for both pets and groomers.

What if my dog has fleas?

If you suspect your pet has fleas, please let us know before the appointment. Fleas are unfortunately very common throughout San Diego County. If fleas or flea dirt are discovered during your appointment, St. Bark reserves the right to perform a flea treatment to protect our groomers, equipment, and future clients.

Flea treatment fees begin at $30, with more severe infestations subject to additional charges based on the time and sanitation required. This policy helps prevent the spread of fleas between appointments and ensures every client receives a clean and sanitary grooming environment.

Policies

What is your cancellation policy?

We allow a grace period for the first cancellation. Future cancellations or no-shows will incur a $100 fee.

What happens if I am late?

Please have your pet ready at the scheduled appointment time to avoid delays. We allow a 20-minute grace period.

Is it standard to tip?

Tips are always appreciated but never expected.
